History
The History of Surfers Paradise
James Beattie, a farmer, was the first European settler in what is now Surfers Paradise, establishing an 80-acre farm on the northern bank of the Nerang River, near present-day Cavill Avenue. His farm, however, was not successful, and in 1877, he sold it to German immigrant Johan Meyer. Meyer turned the land into a sugar farm and mill, but like Beattie, he struggled with the sandy soil. Within a decade, he shifted his focus to tourism, providing access to visitors eager to enjoy the surf beach. From 1880 to 1928, Meyer’s Ferry operated across the Nerang River, transporting passengers and vehicles, while he also ran a horse-and-buggy service from Southport railway station to the beach. Meyer’s ventures included building the Main Beach Hotel, which later became a post office and was central to the emerging settlement known as Elston.
By 1917, Brisbane real estate company Arthur Blackwood held a land auction in Elston, promoting the subdivision as the Surfers’ Paradise Estate—the first recorded reference to the name Surfers Paradise. However, the auction failed due to poor access. The completion of the Jubilee Bridge in 1925 and the extension of the South Coast Road opened up Elston to more visitors, spurring interest from speculators and investors, especially in nearby areas like Burleigh Heads.
In 1925, Brisbane hotelier Jim Cavill opened the Surfers Paradise Hotel on what would later become the site of the Surfers Paradise Centre, which includes the Surfers Paradise Beer Garden and Hard Rock Café. The hotel, along with a neighboring zoo, became a popular attraction. Cavill’s efforts to rename Elston paid off, and in 1933, the local council officially changed the suburb’s name to Surfers Paradise, recognizing its growing popularity and tourism appeal. After a fire destroyed the original Surfers Paradise Hotel in 1936, Cavill rebuilt it the following year, solidifying its role as a central hub for the area.
In 1934, Surfers Paradise State School was established and relocated to its current site on the Isle of Capri in 1976. By the late 1930s, a Methodist Church was constructed in Clifford Street, which later became part of the Uniting Church in 1977. After closing in 1991, the church was moved to Emmanuel College in Carrara, where it now serves as a chapel.
During the late 1940s, Margot Kelly introduced the Hibiscus Room, an upscale restaurant and entertainment venue that attracted an exclusive clientele. This period also marked the start of a development boom that transformed Surfers Paradise, with the construction of the first high-rise, Kinkabool, in 1959. Standing at 10 stories tall, Kinkabool set the tone for the many towering apartment buildings that would follow, including iconic structures like Iluka, St Tropez, and The Pink Poodle. The 1980s brought a surge of Japanese investment, further fueling the area’s growth.
While little remains of the area’s original vegetation and natural features, early subdivisions and landmarks like Budds Beach continue to reflect the suburb’s history as a center for boating, fishing, and swimming. Surfers Paradise remains an iconic location on the Gold Coast, with its high-rise skyline visible from Coolangatta and the hinterland.
In the early 2010s, the Surfers Paradise Festival celebrated the local music, food, fashion, and art scene, contributing to the cultural growth of the Gold Coast. Today, The Esplanade and streets like Cavill Avenue, Orchid Avenue, and Elkhorn Avenue are the heart of activity, lined with shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. Main Beach and The Spit
